By the time the sun had risen into the treetops, Archer busted into Wick's room, demanding he get up.
Wick winced and buried his head under his pillow. That tired, empty feeling still weighed on his body. Like he didn't want to get up now, or ever again.
âCome on,â Archer said, âwe're going.â Something thudded against Wick's side. Probably his bag, which he had packed the night before, hoping that come morning he would feel more willing to leave.
When Wick still didnât move, Archer tried a different tactic. âGet up or I get the cold water, and I'll dump it on your head.â
Wick forced himself to roll over so that the pillow no longer covered his head. He rubbed at his eyes, trying to summon the energy to get up.
Archer waited for a moment before leaving without a word.
After much hesitation, Wick dragged himself out of bed. He stood in the sunlight pouring through the windows, feeling the warmth on his skin. Only his skin, though, no deeper.
He missed how the sun gave him energy. He should have known that would be what he missed the most.
He had slept in his clothes, so all Wick had to do was to make the bed (or at least a rough approximation of making the bed), then put on his shoes and started down the stairs with his bag over his shoulder. He felt impossibly less ready to travel to some unknown village than he had when he woke up.
Archer's mother stopped him on his way down the stairs, holding out some brick red garment. âIt's much too cold outside today. You'll need this.â
Wick took whatever it was and realized it must be a jacket or something of the like. âThank you.â He continued down the stairs, putting the jacket on as he went. It was fleecy to the touch and provided an extra layer of warmth that he hadn't quite expected from its light weight.
He found Archer in the kitchen, pulling various food items off shelves and stashing them in the unfillable bag. âAbout time,â he said when he saw Wick. âGet what you want for breakfast. We're eating while we walk.â
An unhappy horse snort came from the bag as a whole loaf of bread went tumbling inside. Archer stuck his nose inside the bag and apologized to Sasha.
âDid you ever take Sasha out of the bag while you were here?â Wick asked, trying to select a peach from a basket of peaches.
âOf course I did,â Archer said. He tilted his head. âOr, I think I did. Did I? I don't remember now.â
Wick sighed and shook his head.
The walk to human territory was strangely uneventful. Even with their papers from Archerâs father, Wick expected to find enemies behind every bush, tree, and small rise. But as it happened, they met no one and were able to travel in peace all the way to human territory.
As they crossed the border from seraph territory into human territory, Wick asked, âDo I get to know where
